Fayetteville, Feb’y 22, iStHJ. 94tf JOUiV H. COOK., Auctioneer. VALUABLE FARmTnG LAND FOR SALE. I^IIE Plantation on Cape Fear River, known ai the Col. Ashe place. These lands are without doubt the most valuable on the Cape Fear. They are located nine miles above Fayetteville, on the East side of the Cape F ear, contain 702 acres, most admirably adapted to the cultivation of cotton, corn, oats and wheat. NUn of acknowledged judgment say it will average 30 to 50 ' bushels of corn to the acre; about 200 acres are cleared, ^ and it will produce 100 bales of cotton, besides provi- i sions for the force. The uncleared land cannot be surpassed any where, i and will yield 50 to f0 bushels of corn to the acre, and ! as much Cotton as any in this country: situated within y miles of the best market iu the State, with Steamboat j navigation to either Fayetteville or Wilmington; with I richness of soil seldom equalled—never surpassed, makes the most VALUABLE and DESIRABLE FAR.M in Ihe I State. I In connection with the above, 1 offer 208 acres of [ L.\ND on West side of Cape Fear, known as the “White ' Lands,’’ just opposite the above. I will sell the above ! lands on the most favorable terms; a bargain may be I had. If not disposed of sooner, they will be sold at I .\rCTION, at the Market House in Fayetteville, on I May Hth, 1800. .^s to ]uality of Land, I refer to Col. ; W addill. Messrs. John Waddill. A. A. It possesses the elements of the , wildest romance, but is religiously believed by j very many persons. We give it as it was told to us, I without, of course, endorsing the occurrences as , actual facts. About two weeks ago, in the village of Latrobe, J iu western Pennsylvania, a solemn mass was per- ■ fornjed in the Roman Catholic Church, for the repose of the soul of a deceased priest. A number of worshippers were in the church at the time. J ust as the officiating priest was about to perform ! the most solemn part ol the rites, his purpose was cheeked by an astonisliing appearance. 'J’he form oi‘ the deceased priest himself appeared in frout of the altar, with hand uplifted in a warning manner. The officiating clergyman stepj>ed back, when the ghostly priest, or priestly ghost, ad dressed his brother in the flesh aud the congrega tion. He said they were taking unnecessary trouble to get him out of purgatory. The priest might save his prayers and his penitents their pennies. They could not get him out of pur gatory because he never was in it. Further more there was no chance for him to get ti:orc, as there never was such a place as I’urgatory. It Feb’y 20. On what foundation the story rests is niore than we can tell, but there must have been some event to give rise to such an extraordinary report. I Don’t Cure If 1 Do.”—In olden time, be fore the Maine laws were invented. Wing kept the hotel at Middle Granville, and from his well- stocked bar furnished “accommodations to man and beast.” He was a good landlord, but terri bly deaf. Fish, the village painter, was afflicted in the same way. One day they were sitting by themselves in the bar-room. Wing was behind the counter waiting for the next customer; while Fish was lounging before'^the fire with a thirsty look, cast ing sheep’s eyes occasionally at Wing’s decanters, and wishing most devoutly that some one would come in and treat. A traveller from the South, on his way to Bran don, stepped in to inquire the distance. Going up to the counter he said— “Can you tell me sir, how far is it to Brandon?” “Brandy?” says the ready landlord, jumping up; “yes sir, I think I have some,” at the same time handing down a decanter of the precious liquid. ‘•You misunderstand me,” says the stranger: “I a.sked how far it was to Brandon?” “They call it pretty good brandy,” says Wing. “Will you take sugar with it?” reaching, as he spoke, for the bowl and toddystick. The despairing traveller turned to Fish. “The landlord,” said he, “seems to be deaf; will you tell me how far it is to Brandon?” “Thank you,” said Fish; “I don't care if I do take a drink with yuul” The stranger treated and fled.
